Soccer superstar Christine Sinclair of the University of Portland has been awarded the 30th annual Honda-Broderick Cup, designating her as the 2006 Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year. Former winner Jackie Joyner-Kersee presented Sinclair with the prestigious award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic achievement but team contributions, scholastics and community involvement as well.
The senior forward led her team to an NCAA title, scoring seven post-season goals. Sinclair has the distinction of being one of six soccer players in NCAA history with over 100 goals (110) and 30 assists. She was named the NCAA Offensive Player of the Year and West Coast Conference Player of the year for the third time. Sinclair scored 39 goals, breaking the NCAA all-time season mark, for 88 points as the second highest in the NCAA for the season.
Sinclair finished her collegiate soccer career with 252 points; making her the fourth highest of all time in the NCAA, as well as scoring 11 game- winning goals and tying the NCAA record for a goal scored in consecutive games (17). Sinclair also earned the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American of the Year, and is a four-time All American recipient.
